Open access

OpenAIREOpen source once started in the computerworld, infecting the open culture movement, inspiring free music, and also left its seeds in the academic world, where the phenomenon is called 'open access'.

The situation: when an academic wants to write a paper for a well-respected journal, he has to pay the publisher to be published (this can be as much as 1000 euro). Take notice of the fact that the academic person and the financial transaction are both paid by public tax money. After the publishing, the university has to pay the subscription on this journal to put this paper in 1 of their libraries (this can be as much as 5000 euro). Again, this is paid by public money. If students want to make copies of this paper, they have to pay some royalties for the author, who has been writing this paper during his work for the university. You understand that in the internet era, this absurd situation can no longer stand. And that's why the publishing model is taking small steps towards a new model. Within the academic world, the Open Access model gains more and more success, while publishers are experimenting with more open license models.open

This also happens thanks to initiatives of government bodies, like the European Uniion, who are worried what happens with tax payer's money. Recently the EU announced the OpenAIRE initiative. "OpenAIRE aims to support the implementation of Open Access in Europe. It provides the means to promote and realize the widespread adoption of the Open Access Policy."

noerror quits the scene

After 10 years noerror stops its feed of announcements of new releases.
Noerror was a project born in early 2000. Its first purpose was to relate some of the most famous demoscene music releases, it extended to all the active demoscene netlabels and finally all the netlabels, no disctinction.

Reason: "Years passing by, netlabels have much evolved: Musicians and their netlabels now come from whole different backgrounds and do not share the same values, approaches, technology, sound or goals anymore.
This amazing success of netlabels, their diversity, their productivity has however slowly, we think, undermined the idea of a single news feed."

interesting paper from 2002

This is very interesting reading about the bloated music industry, written by Peter Tschmuck (link paper - pdf):
"This paper analyses the music majors claim for creativity by providing a tentative definition of the term creativity derived from economic, psychological, and sociological findings about the creative environment. Further, by utilizing a descriptive-empirical analysis, the processes and structures of the music industry are examined in detail in order to investigate whether the music industrys highly integrated oligopolistic market structures provide a fertile ground for creativity and innovation. Based on empirical results, finally, this paper argues that the music industrys current oligopolistic structures do indeed not foster creativity but, in contrast, restrain and even strangle the creative processes of artists."
4 years later the author Peter Tschmuck wrote about this issue in his academic doctorate, called "Creativity and innovation in the music industry".
