to celebrate its fifth birthday, netwaves releases a double compilation with an overview of netlabels' essentials: this is not a sort of 'best of', because there's too much beauty in the netlabel world to put on two records;
this is merely a subjective choice of netaudio delikatessen, collected by our netwaves team;
we've split up the collection in 2 releases: one to party, named 'beats', and one to drink cava, called 'bytes', hence 'beats and bytes'

we wish to thank all artists and netlabels for sharing their stuff with the universe and the 99% of us

K.U.Leuven kiest voor Open Access

Vanuit een van de grootste werkgevers in Leuven, komt volgende positieve wind gewaaid, het is alsof de VRT in een mededeling aankondigt om "Creative Commons-muziek" te spelen: "Het Universiteitsbestuur heeft het voorstel goedgekeurd om Open Access aan de K.U.Leuven te implementeren. Dat zal gebeuren via het eigen, nog uit te breiden depot LIRIAS. Open Access houdt in dat onderzoekers hun onderzoeksresultaten vrij op het internet beschikbaar stellen. Het fungeert als een etalage van de onderzoeksresultaten van de universiteit en kan zo de toegankelijkheid van het onderzoek verhogen en de K.U.Leuven als onderzoeksuniversiteit profileren. De Dienst Onderzoeksco�rdinatie en de Universiteitsbibliotheek zullen de uitvoering van het project verder vorm geven. This weekend this song was hanging in my head, i don't know why, or where it came from. It just sometimes happens, and this time it was, fortunately, a nice, kitschy, 'gay', tune. Thanks to the open - what some call the illegal - aspect of the internet, i'm a happy guy to rediscover this tune, and what's more, to find out the existence of a bizar videoclip i wasn't aware of. With Portuguese subtitles 8-S
This is not only the strength of the internet, but also the strength of search engines (in this case Google, you should try this once, haha!), where i found the result in just 3 steps with the only data i knew: "do you need me?" and "70's". Thank you, internet!
Sorry for the people who don't like 70's kitsch.

Here are some updates about netlabels and netlabelism:

The Netaudio London festival passed without any significant notice, despite the presence of Nurse with wound and Bruce Gilbert. You can read a review on netlabelism.com

The upcoming Netaudio Lissabon festival is postponed, due to technical reasons. Read more in this press message.

This year there was no Cologne Commons festival, as you noticed of course. The reason why is unclear. We hope we can rejoin them next year, because it's a cozy party.

"The Sun Will Rise" is a 'Inter-Netlabel Compilation for Japanese Relief'. This release is an artistic support for the victims of the disasters in Japan. You can download the album with mostly ambient, downtempo, chill-out music from the IA parking. The project just closed down the donation part. More info at the project's website.

The famous Spanish techno-techhouse netlabel Offaudio quits the netlabel scene. Read more at their website: "After 7 years, Offaudio says adi�s". No reason is given for the departure, but as with lots of gone netlabels, we presume personal change-of-life reasons are an important factor for this kind of decisions. Pity.

Netwaves just discovered a new netabel e-zine: Net Audio Magazine, important for its reviews of netlabel releases.

debat Sabam - epiloog

Vorige donderdag hebben we het feest van de arbeid vooraf gevierd met een debat over kunst en kultuur, en hoe open dit kan zijn met bvb. Creative Commons. De opkomst was laag en de discussie niet wereldschokkend, maar dat weerhoudt netwaves niet om al een volgend debat voor te bereiden. Suggesties voor onderwerpen zijn steeds welkom.

Dank zij onze collega's van de nieuwsdienst Scoops van Radio Scorpio, zijn er 2 zeer interessante interviews te beluisteren: eentje met Lieven Scheire en eentje met Thierry Dachelet, ��n van de opperhoofden van Sabam.

Die van het studentenblad Veto beperkten zich daarentegen tot het interviewen van de BV'er Lieven, en dan nog zo weinig mogelijk over Sabam. Echt kleinzierig!

Yannick heeft een verslag gemaakt ivm. het colloquium van Groen! "Een moderne kijk op muziekbeleid":

Terwijl er in socialistische kringen nog volop gekaterd werd ter verwerking van de jaarlijkse rode feestdag, besloten ze bij Groen! deze 2de mei nuttig in te vullen met een colloquium over een ''moderne kijk op muziekbeleid." (https://www.muziekcentrum.be/news.php?ID=2509) Op deze manier wil de partij input verkrijgen van de (voornamelijk populaire) muzieksector met betrekking tot een aantal agendapunten inzake popbeleid. Een aantal van de pijnpunten

op de agenda waren de vraag naar meer fiscale hefbomen voor de sector, meer internationale groeikansen voor opkomende muzikanten, een aangepaste regeling voor kleine en middelgrote concertorganisatoren en een meer modern auteursrecht. Wij van netwaves waren van de partij en het was natuurlijk vooral dat laatste wat ons interesseerde.

De verschillende programmapunten werden behandeld in verschillende werkgroepen die in beperkte groep het debat openden rond het euvel in kwestie. In de werkgroep auteursrecht waren het vooral Olivier Maeterlinck van BEA (https://www.belgianentertainment.be/), Luc Gulinck van Uradex (https://www.uradex.be/) en Carine Libert van Sabam (https://www.sabam.be/) die het hoge woord voerden en dit onder het wakend oog van Brussels Parlementslid en moderator van dienst Annemie Maes (https://www.annemiemaes.be/). Het opmerkelijkste punt in de sneuvelnota van Groen! betrof het voorstel om downloaden te legaliseren. Al moeten we die kop met een serieuze korrel zout nemen zo blijkt. Groen! stelt voor om een algemene wettelijke licentie in te lassen, waarvoor juist weten wij na een uur discussi�ren nog steeds niet. Het lijkt alsof ze het niet zo bedoelen dat de illegale downloads gelegaliseerd worden door een algemene taks. Wat wij er dan wel uit verstaan hebben is dat er inderdaad een algemene taks komt, die ze willen aanrekenen aan de serviceproviders, maar dat er nog steeds toestemming van de auteurs nodig is om te mogen downloaden. Daarenboven geeft Groen! grif toe dat ze wel verwachten dat de serviceproviders deze kost wel zullen doorrekenen. Algemene conclusie is aldus dat Groen! een nieuwe heffing op internetverkeer wil invoeren en dat downloaden nog steeds illegaal blijft. Dit zijn natuurlijk extra inkomsten voor de sector, maar of dit ook iets gaat verhelpen aan piraterij of de wezenlijke discussies rond de downloadproblematiek is ons een raadsel.

En ook de rest van de sector stond nogal sceptisch tegenover voorliggende sneuvelnota. Wat wij wel hebben onthouden van dit colloquium is dat de sector vraagt om piraterij effectief aan te pakken en tegelijk het legaal aanbod te promoten en de consument te onderwijzen over het auteursrecht en de alternatieven. En daar zien wij met netwaves een geknipte taak weggelegd voor onszelf. Ook in de toekomst zullen wij blijven pleiten voor meer vrije muziek en zullen wij naar beste vermogen proberen de rest van wereld te onderwijzen over de mogelijkheden van Creative Commons en vrije content. Hopelijk ziet de sector op termijn in dat educatie over een alternatief legaal aanbod bijdraagt aan de sensibilisatie van het illegale en kunnen we alzo met verhoogde steun en input van de sector zoeken naar nieuwe mogelijkheden voor vrije muziek. Als Groen! deze punten zou meedragen in haar volgende inspanningen, moeten we de term 'sneuvelnota' in de toekomst hopelijk niet meer zo letterlijk nemen.

netwaves' showcase in Gent

Volgende zondag 8 mei 2011 geeft netwaves nog eens een showcase in de vorm van een workshop en flyerstand, deze keer op de 'on tour' van homerecording.be.
